Did you know?

Real coffee (Wiener Caffe being the most popular) is found only in foreigners shops and on the black market due to the soaring price and imports restrictions. Romanians can purchase instead a mix of 20% coffee and 80% various herbs (mostly oatmeal and chickpeas), ironically called “Nechezol (Neigh-rol), or Chicory as surrogates.
Starting 1985 there is only one TV station available, broadcasting for 2 hours each day. The party believed that more time spent in front of the TV meant less time spent working.
You could have access to hot water two times a week, for two hours. The gas pressure was so low during the day, that people prefered to cook during the night. Electricity is quite precious, with regular black-outs, forcing people to use candles.
